Hands Folded, Closed Eyes… -and Pray?

Fold hands, close eyes, and pray. This should ring a bell, whether you are a Christian or not. It’s worldwide common knowledge of how praying should be like. But why? And what does the Bible have to say about all of this?

In the Jewish tradition, there is evidence in the Talmud that some prayed with hands folded. Another common belief is that the hands folded posture was derived from the Roman practice symbolising submission. But what does the Bible have to say about praying with hands folded and eyes closed? Let me show you on the photo below:

Believe it or not, there is really no passages in the Bible that says we have to fold our hands and close our eyes when praying.

But we do see a couple of different physical postures that the Bible describes as people pray, like sitting, kneeling, bowing, standing, uplifted hands, walking, and prostrate. But none about folding hands and closing eyes.

So now, some of you may say;
“But I do fold hands and close eyes when I pray, what should I do now?”
Well

STOP IT, and REPENT!!! (I’m just joking!)

You, my friend, you continue.

Just remember, it is NOT an exclusive-must-holier-than-thou-thing.
If folding hands and closing eyes helps you to connect, humble and worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24), then great! Keep doing that. Just don’t forget, God, the creator and sustainer of the universe is not limited to that kind of prayer ritual. The Bible shows quite the opposite.
